Alex Borg confirmed his status as the MBSA snooker champion after overcoming the challenge of Joe Grech in the final of the Premier Division on Saturday.

Grech enjoyed the better start in the final, played at the Melita Band Club in Msida, when he profited from some uncharacteristic loose play by Borg to take a two-frame lead.

Before too long, Borg found his touch, knocking in breaks of 90, 79, 67, 56 and 58 to win the next six frames.

Grech bridged the gap to 6-3, but the Mellieha-born cueist moved within one frame of victory when compiling a break of 82 in the 10th.

Borg failed to wrap up his victory in the 11th frame which went Grech's way but he soon made amends in the next. Pulling off a 57, his seventh over-50 break of the evening, Borg secured the national title for the fourth time in his career.

Last week, Kevin D'Agostino won the Div. One title after he had the better of Tony Mifsud 6-1 in the final.

Peter Schembri completed a remarkable recovery in the Division Two final, coming back from 4-1 down to beat Arthur Chetcuti 5-4.

After Saturday's final, MBSA secretary Paul Galea and Franco Azzopardi, chairman of the Malta Sports Council, distributed the trophies to the winners of all the MBSA competitions this season.
