Foreign Minister Tonio Borg is uncontested for the post of deputy leader of the Nationalist Party, which he currently occupies, and for which nominations were open until yesterday evening.

Alex Vassallo, chairman of the PN's electoral commission, said yesterday that Dr Borg's was the only nomination. According to the party statute, a deputy leader has to be appointed after every general election. This procedure does not apply to the party leader who only needs to be confirmed. Dr Borg became deputy leader in 2004, filling the post vacated by Lawrence Gonzi who took over from Eddie Fenech Adami as party leader and Prime Minister.
