Andy Borg played to a par of 72 in the third round of the men's individual event at the Miglianico Golf Club yesterday. He finished with the sixth best score of the day but is still in 12th place in the classification with today's 18 holes to go.

The current competition leader is Lebanon's Rachid Akl with a 213 (three under). Borg's score after 54 holes is 221 (five over). Earlier in the week, he had rounds of 75 and 74.

The other Maltese golfers in the competition, Chris Bergedahl and John J. Micallef Verelst, had low scores of 87 and 86, respectively.

In the event for teams, Malta are still ninth with 469 (37 over), two shots behind Greece. France lead the standings on 429 (3 under).

In bowls, David Farrugia was beaten by gold medal favourite Matteo Albani (San Marino) 12-0 but he made up for that upset with a 12-9 victory over Miroslav Petkovic, of Montenegro, in the afternoon match to stay in contention for a place in the semi-finals.

Today, Farrugia plays a decisive match against Tunisia player Sadok M. Zaidi who lost to Albani 12-2. The winner moves to the last four of the Raffa competition which comes to a close tomorrow.

The Maltese basketball team will be classified seventh at the end of the women's competition following a 63-43 (14-7, 10-10, 19-11, 20-15) defeat to Turkey in the side's last outing in Pescara.

It was the second upset in a matter of days against Turkey following the 81-73 result of the group match last Sunday. Today, Turkey play Albania with fifth position at stake.

Meanwhile, unfavourable weather conditions continued to wreak havoc with the sailing programme. Yesterday, only one race was held from the scheduled three and Maya Podesta was 12th in Laser Radial.

France's Sophie de Turckheim leads on seven points. Podesta is 13th overall with 49 points.

In track and field, sprinter Nicolai Portelli completed his commitments in Pescara by running the 100m semi-finals. He was eighth in his heat with a time of 10.90 seconds.
