Diane Borg came close to set a new national record in the 100m this evening after dashing home eighth in the first round Heat Two race at the Olympic Stadium in London.

Lining up on the starting blocks alongside world champion Carmelita Jeter, Borg crossed the finish line in 11.92s, just 0.03 seconds slower than her national record set at the Liechtenstein GSSE last year.

Earlier in the day, Borg was unable to go lower than the 12-second mark but her 12.00 time was still good enough to earn her a place in the first round.

The top two positions of the preliminary round meant an automatic passage to the next round but in front of a packed Olympic Stadium, crammed with 80,000 spectators, Borg was beaten to the finish line by Cameroon’s Delphine Atangana (11.71) and Belize’s Kaina Martinez (11.81).

However, she was classified seventh overall and with the best ten from 33 preliminary round starters going on to race again in the evening’s first round, Borg earned another chance to lower her record.

The other runners in Heat Two this morning were Shinoona Al-Habsi (Oman, 12.45), Cristina Llovera (Andorra, 12.78), Nafissa Souleyman (Niger, 12.81), Asenate Manoa (Tuvalu, 13.48) and Fatima Dahman (Yemen, 13.95).
