Malta coach John Buttigieg has called up three new players to the national squad.

Valletta defender Steve Borg, Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Reuben Gauci and John Mintoff, the Sliema Wanderers winger currently recovering from a minor injury, have been invited to join the pool of national team players after their performances in the opening four months of the season caught the eye of Buttigieg and his assistant Carmel Busuttil.

While Gauci has one cap, against Iceland in 2005, Borg and Mintoff have yet to make their debut for the national side but both played for the U-21 team in the past.

The players on Buttigieg’s list were due to report back for training at Ta’ Qali yesterday after breaking off following Malta’s qualifier away to Croatia (0-3) on November 17.

Malta’s next international assignment is a friendly against Switzerland on February 9.
