The KSU University Students' Council said today that a number of books are being kept under lock and key at the University library because of their intrinsic value and not as an affront to freedom of expression.

Commenting on the ongoing controversy on censorship and the removal of some books from libraries, the KSU said it had been informed that books of intrinsic value were being treated like those available for use in the Melitensia, Archives and Rare books sections.

"All the books under the so-called lock and key are available on the library catalogue and available for use for all the library patrons. Any person requesting to see any of these books may do so without any hindrance whatsoever.

"Moreover KSU is informed that the reason this is being done is to safeguard and preserve these books which are difficult to obtain or are publications that are now out of print. These books are freely available for anyone wishing to make use of them," the council said.
