I was extremely interested to read the article Polish Comic To Raise Holocaust Awareness Among Youngsters (July 31).

Having visited the site of the notorious Auschwitz death camp, I'm still shocked at the horror that took place there. Between June 1941 and January 1945 about one million men, women and children perished in the three Auschwitz concentration camps. At its prime, the whole complex was a deadly prison to some 150,000 inmates that were being either murdered outright, starved or worked to death by the Nazi monsters.

Knowing its provocative history, it was difficult for me to digest what happened there over 60 years ago. It is the most chilling experience that I've ever had, a gut-wrenching feeling I wish I'll never go through again.

However, I feel that the enormous magnitude of this concentration camp plays a big role in today's society. Despite the human tragedy of the Holocaust, it would appear that mankind still has a great deal to learn. As I think about the atrocities that have occurred in Rwanda, Serbia and Darfur in recent history, I realise that not everyone has learned any lessons.

It is important that everyone, especially the young, knows about the utter cruelty and savage behaviour that took place during the Holocaust because there are still deniers. It's all part of a process to make sure it isn't forgotten and doesn't ever happen again.

Since my visit to Auschwitz I decided to humanise the whole experience by writing two books which are still on my computer. They are the first ever written in Maltese intended for our young and not-so-young generations. One I called Reżistenza Taż-Żgħażagħ which demonstrates the courage and heroism of a number of youngsters during those difficult times, and the other is Tfal U Żgħażagħ Tal-Olokawst which recounts what some children and young adults went through at the hands of the Nazi soldiers.

My only hope is that some local publisher will read this letter and offer to help me to publish at least one of these books.
