The 457th anniversary of the tragic siege of 1551 was aptly marked on the exact date and location with the launching of a book by Gozitan poet Ġanninu Cremona.

The book, L-Assedju ta' Għawdex 1551 - Ballata, was launched during a soiree on July 25, the date when 5,500 people (almost the entire population of Gozo) were taken into slavery on St John's demi bastion at the Citadel.

The poem in the form of a ballad recalls various historical figures such as Bernardo de Opuo, Governor De Sesse, Friar Bonavia and Dragut.

It also pays tribute to the thousands of nameless Gozitans who perished.

The book is illustrated with several pictures by Paul Camilleri Cauchi. The poem was read by 10 people interpreting different characters, while Mario Caruana and Ruth Portelli sang excerpts from the poem to the rhythm of the guitar duo led by Joseph Engerer.

Joe Camilleri gave a literary appreciation of the book.
