A set of 17th century manuscripts were discovered discarded at a Wasteserv bring-in site in Mrieħel recently, according to Dr Abela.

“This was horrific for us but it shows that people are still not aware of the great value old documents have to our historical heritage,” she said.

Dr Abela appealed to people to contact the National Archives if they came across any old documents. “Collective heritage belongs to everybody,” she said.

Theresa Zammit Lupi, the Notarial Archive’s book conservator, stressed it was imperative that only qualified people should do conservation work.

“Maltese institutions, which have prestigious collections, should ensure that they have qualified staff to be able to take care of our patrimony in the most professional manner,” Dr Zammit Lupi said, adding it was crucial that a distinction was made between a conservator and a book binder.

Her final plea went to students: “Do not be afraid to take up conservation studies. Our heritage needs you.”
