Marco Bonnici was elected as the new president of the Malta Union of Teachers after beating his rival by just six votes.

Mr Bonnici, a former vice president, obtained 1,200 votes, while Franklin Barbara, the general secretary won 1,194 votes, the MUT said.

The result came at the end of a bitter campaign which saw the two candidates accusing each other of hijacking the electoral process.

Mr Bonnici had said that as MUT president, he would set a six-month time frame for the conclusion of all collective agreements as he argued that in recent years, talks had dragged on for too long.

Another proposal he put forward was for the establishment of a foundation which would focus exclusively on education.

The full election results for president, senior vice president along with the full composition of the new council will be issued in due course, the MUT said in a statement.
