Malta won its first ever medal in the World Masters Championships when Mario Bonello grabbed silver in the 100m in Finland, yesterday.

The veteran sprinter was in top form when he breezed into the final after winning his opening heat in 10.95 seconds and then topped his semi-final when clocking 11.08 seconds to reach the final with the third fastest time.

In the final, Bonello recovered from a slow start to dash home second in 10.99 seconds. Finland's Nnamdi Anusim took gold when covering the distance in 10.94 s.

The other Maltese sprinter in these Over-35 championships is Alan Zammit who despite struggling with an injury still managed to complete his heat in 12.78 seconds to finish 21st from 40 participants.

Today, Bonello and Zammit will take part in the 200m heats.
