A car bomb exploded outside a small Nato military base in Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan today, police said.

General Shafiq Afzali, the police commander for southern Afghanistan, said the blast happened in a car park used by Afghans visiting Camp Nathan Smith.

The base houses a few hundred Canadian soldiers, American military police and US and Canadian government employees working on development projects.

Information on casualties was not immediately available.

People reached by phone inside Camp Nathan Smith said they had been ordered into bunkers.
