Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden is expected to be out of action for six months with a knee injury, the Premier League club confirmed yesterday.

Holden had 26 stitches inserted in the gash on his knee following a challenge with Man. United’s Jonny Evans in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday, which saw the defender sent off.

The 25-year-old United States international will take no further part in the season, including the FA Cup semi-final against Stoke at Wembley on April 17.

Manager Owen Coyle said the main focus was getting the Aberdeen-born player back to full fitness.

“First and foremost our main concern is Stuart and his recovery. He will get all the time and support he needs,” said Coyle.

“Stuart has been outstanding this season and has shown he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. He has such desire, strength of character and a winning mentality and he will draw on those attributes in his rehabilitation.”

Holden revealed that Evans had apologised to him on the phone.

“Just had sincere phone call from Jonny Evans wishing me best in recovery, def (sic) wasn’t intentional just unfortunate part of game,” he posted on his Twitter microblogging website.
