Modification to power station boilers to reduce emissions are projected to cost €20 million, and funding is to be sought from the EU, Enemalta said today.

Referring to a recent judgement by the European Court of Justice regarding emissions, Enemalta said it was compliant with EU regulations governing emissions, except with those regarding NOx.

Following a report commissioned from KEMA, who are international consultants for testing and certification of energy, the corporation said it issued a tender for the necessary modifications to its boilers. The modifications will be completed by 2011, reducing NOx as well as well as dust emissions.

"An application for EU funding for this boiler modification project, which is estimated to cost circa €20 million, is also being prepared. This application shall be submitted following extensive discussions with Jaspers, a consulting agency which provides EU member states with technical assistance for such projects," Enemalta said.

The corporation also pointed out that it using low sulphur and low ash fuels at Delimara and since May 2008, emissions of SO2 and dust from this plant were well within the applicable limits.
