BMW has just launched its second version of the Mini, the iconic small car that originally took the streets by storm in 1959 and remained virtually unchanged for 40 years.

The hugely successful small car has undergone a very mild facelift on the outside that is difficult to notice at a glance. The front headlights have been raised to enhance pedestrian safety and the front indicators have been incorporated inside.

Mechanics can also now move the front of the car forward by 10 centimetres to gain easier access to the engine - one of the areas where the car has undergone something of a revolution.

Under the bonnet is a range of new engines that are not only more powerful but also up to 20 per cent more economical.

The new Cooper delivers 48.7 miles per gallon on a combined cycle, yet is still capable of belting out 120 bhp and covering 0-60 mph in 9.1 seconds. The 175 bhp Cooper S, on the other hand, can sprint the same distance in just 7.1 seconds. Six speed gearboxes are standard.

Both models will be followed in the first half of 2007 by a new Mini One featuring a 95 bhp 1.4-litre four-cylinder power unit, as well as a new diesel version.

The interior has also changed. The big central speedo has got bigger and has a wider range of functions, while rear legroom has also been improved, partially due to the growth of the length of the car by about six centimetres.

Something that has not changed about the new Mini is the drive. Though more supple, its hallmark low centre of gravity and wide wheel track still guarantee go-kart-like handling.

In a first for Malta, all new Minis come with a basic service package for five years or 50,000 kilometres.

And on top of that it is now also possible to buy a complete service and repair package that covers all costs related to maintenance, parts and labour. The cost of the package depends on the model, the mileage and the period of the contract. For example, cover for five years, or 50,000 kilometres, costs Lm877 for the Cooper and Lm999 for the Cooper S.

The service and repair packages, which can be tailored to meet individual needs and cover the vehicle in all EU countries, are also available to existing Mini customers, though the period is backdated to when the car was purchased.

Prices for the new Mini Cooper start from Lm12,800 and finance packages for the cars, which also cover the service and repair package, are available from Lm199 per month over six years plus an upfront 10 per cent deposit.

Further information about the car and service packages is available from Muscat Motors Ltd, Rue D'Argens, Gzira, tel: 2133 0041.
