The construction sector is often lauded as one of the motors of the economy but its cost to the environment remains devastating.

Pictures sent to Times of Malta on Saturday show the run-off from a construction site in Triq il-Luzzu, Qawra, turning the sea water into a murky brown colour.

"It is being allowed to flow right into the sea, polluting quite a big stretch of the bay," the reader said.

Meanwhile, pictures taken from the Tigne tunnel show construction rubble piling up in the road.

New buildings continue being erected at Tigne Point, turning the area into a veritable concrete jungle.

Residents and NGOs have frequently highlighted the careless methods adopted by construction workers in blatant disrespect to residents and motorists and untold harm to the environment.
