Bio technology is the study and use of renewable biological resources and organisms and their corresponding conversion into vital products and bio energy. Bio technology is a fast-growing economic sector both on a European and a global level due to an increase in demand for renewable and naturally sourced resources.

In view of the fact that the world’s oceans and seas account for 71 per cent of the earth’s surface and is still largely understudied and unexplored, the sea is seen to hold a massive potential for science-based innovative products.

The EU through its integrated maritime policy and blue growth agenda is looking at enhancing the framework for the development of this economic sector while setting out policies for its sustainable and responsible management. Research and education are undoubtedly key components for the successful development of sustainable economic opportunities. To this end, the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation ‘Horizon 2020’ plays a crucial role in driving and supporting research and innovation (R&I) related to marine and maritime areas.

Malta Marittima is seeking to set up the necessary network to help this economic sector thrive locally and on a European level. Through collaborations with local entities and foreign clusters it is seeking to promote research, sharing of information, sustainable resource development and corresponding product development in this emerging market. Malta with its relatively large territorial waters, diverse eco system, deeper diverse waters and strong educational and research system has a lot to offer and gain.

The areas of research and study are various. From the study of resources around our coasts to the process of compound extraction. From sustainable cultivation to ensure availability to innovative product development of food, medicinal, fuel, etc. All this without losing our focus on sustainability, to protect our oceans for generations to come.

In this regard, Malta Marittima Agency will be launching the ‘Blue Bio-Technology Cluster’ working group. Entities forming part of this cluster include University academics, entrepreneurs and policy-makers. This close collaboration between parties should enhance cooperation and facilitate the process of research and product development. Interested parties involved in this sector should contact Malta Marittima for more information.
