Birkirkara 1 Floriana 0

Birkirkara returned to winning ways when they edged Floriana 1-0 in a scrappy encounter at the National Stadium today.

It was far from a convincing performance from the champions who looked jaded and short of ideas for much of the match but in the end they managed to find the breakthrough that enabled them to move to third in the standings on 17 points, one ahead of Hamrun Spartans.

The first half had little to offer with neither side creating any serious chances. In fact the best chance of the opening 45 minutes came from Floriana when Manolito Micallef connected to a Pablo Doffo free-kick but his shot was blocked by Michael Fraser, the Birkirkara goalkeeper.

After the interval, the match remained evenly balanced and when everything looked that it would finish in a goalless draw the Stripes struck.

The clock marked 76 minutes when from an Emiliano Lattes free-kick the ball fell to Patrick Borg who pushed the ball past Lofti Saidi.

Emiliano Lattes was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
