Bisazza Street is Sliema shall be closed to traffic as from Tuesday, Resources Minister George Pullicino said today.

Speaking during a visit on site this afternoon, the minister said the road will remain closed until the embellishment project is concluded at the end of May. However, it will reopen for 15 days during the Easter holidays.

The project, which is costing €700,000 to €750,000, will see the street and pavement paved with porfido tiles, bollards will line the street, which will be free from parked cars, increasing the pedestrian area and making space for soft landscaping.

All infrastructure is being replaced and the public toilets have been moved to the seafront.

The square half way down the street will be embellished with fountains, decorative lighting and benches. There will also be a monument featuring three Maltese actors sitting on chairs and sipping coffee. There will also be space for one to sit with the “actors” and take a photo.

The work is being carried out 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The minister visited the shop owners of the area who asked about parking. He told them that parking issues had to be taken into consideration together with the Public Transport reform.

The area, Mr Pullicino said, was the second largest commercial centre in Malta after Valletta.

Once this project is concluded, further embellishment will be carried out in the surrounding area.
