Late own goal saves Pompey

Birmingham City set up an FA Cup fourth-round clash at last year's losing finalists Everton after ending Nottingham Forest's 18-match unbeaten run with a 1-0 win yesterday.

Barry Ferguson broke the deadlock against the run of play with a left-footed shot in the 62nd minute, sending the in-form Premier League side through at the expense of the Championship visitors.

Birmingham also had a Cameron Jerome effort cleared off the line in the closing minutes of the third-round replay at St Andrew's.

Cash-strapped Portsmouth, the only other Premier League club in the night's five matches, looked on their way out when they fell behind at Coventry City after Leon Best put the Championship side ahead on eight minutes.

However, Pompey forced extra-time when Coventry defender Stephen Wright headed the ball into his own net.

When the match looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out, Aaron Mokoena headed home the winner to put the London side in the next round.

Portsmouth, the 2008 winners, will be at home to Sunderland in the fourth round.

Sheffield United earned a ticket to Premier League Bolton Wanderers after beating Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers 3-2 in a replay at Loftus Road featuring a flurry of three goals in the space of four second-half minutes.

Cardiff and Bristol City must replay their all-Championship third-round tie after ending their match in a 1-1 draw.

Third round: Bristol City vs Cardiff 1-1. REPLAYS: Birmingham vs Nottm Forest 1-0; Coventry vs Portsmouth 1-2 (aet); Derby vs Millwall 1-1 (aet; Derby win 5-3 on pens); QPR vs Sheffield United 2-3.
