A strong North-Easterly wind toppled trees in Valley Road Birkirkara and caused damage in several other localities during the day.

Busy Valley Road was closed to traffic after two trees crashed to the ground at about 10.30am, damaging cars and a police motorcycle but fortunately injuring no one.

It was the second such incident in as many months. Two cars were damaged when a tree was brought down by the wind further down Valley Road earlier in the year.

In Valletta, cars in Triq il-Lanċa in Valletta at the foot of the bastions near the Auberge de Baviere were quickly driven or towed away as they ran the risk of being swept out by the savage sea.

At The Strand in Sliema, the waves swept over the low seawall and onto the street, much to the dismay of motorists.

In Luqa an electricity pole was toppled over in the main street.

At least two boats were washed shore - a small sailing yacht at Marsa and a small cabin cruiser at Manoel Island.

The storm is expected to continue until tomorrow.
