Birkirkara midfielder Paul Fenech has been named MFA Footballer of the Year for season 2012/13.

Fenech fended off competition from fellow Birkirkara team-mates, goalkeeper Justin Haber, wing-back Edward Herrera and midfielder Gareth Sciberras, and Hibs winger Clayton Failla to win the most prestigious individual honour in Maltese football.

The 26-year-old Fenech, an established member of the national squad, played a prominent role in Birkirkara's title success, secured after a 3-1 win over Hibernians in a title decider last month.

It is the first time Fenech, who began his career with Naxxar Lions and played for Msida St Joseph before joining Birkirkara, has claimed the MFA Footballer of the Year prize. He succeeds Failla who won the award last year.

Birkirkara coach Paul Zammit took the best coach award, Hibs midfielder Bjorn Kristensen was voted best young player and Floriana's Brazilian forward Igor Coronado was named best foreigner during this evening's 2013 MFA Awards night at the MFCC.

Rowen Muscat, the Birkirkara midfielder, won the goal of the year award in a public vote.
