Updated - Valletta and Birkirkara have qualified for the second qualifying rounds of the Champions League and the Europa League respectively.

Valletta qualified by virtue of the away goal when they lost 2-1 to B36 Torshavn - the aggregate being 2-2.

The Citizens travelled to the Faroe Islands holding a slight edge over their Nordic opponents after winning last week’s opening leg at the Hibs Stadium 1-0.

The Citizens settled down well early on with Jhonnattann hitting the bar after only eight minutes.

But it was B36 who took the lead on 11 minutes when Hanus Thorleifsson hit home after being set up by Hogni Eysturoy.

Valletta fought back and they managed to draw level on 24 minutes when Federico Falcone poked the ball home after being set up by Romeo Romau.

B36 threw more men forward they twice came close to restoring their lead before the break but efforts by Thorleiffson and Jakub Borg were kept out by Henry Bonello, the Valletta goalkeeper.

The match remained evenly-poised on the restart with Santiago Malano forcing Askham into a fine save on 63 minutes.

But three minutes later B36 went 2-1 up when Hannes Agnarsson scored following a pass by Eysturoy.

The woodwork denied Valletta a second time 13 minutes from time when Jhonnattann’s hit the bar.

B36 stepped up the pressure in search of a third goal that would see them through but Valletta defended stoutly to hold on to a memorable qualification.
Valletta will now face Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade in the second qualifying round tie, with the first leg scheduled for next week.

BIRKIRKARA WIN

Meanwhile, Birkirkara, playing home, beat Siroki Brijeg 2-0.

A 1-1 draw in Bosnia last week ensured that Birkirkara came into the second leg brimming with optimism. However, they took the pitch with a sense of urgency that belied their status as favourites to reach the next round.

Shaun Bajada and Vito Plut combined well to create the first scoring opportunity after six minutes, Bajada threaded a through ball to slice open the Bosnian defence but Plut’s diagonal effort was parried away by Antonio Soldo, the Siroki goalkeeper.

The sizzling heat induced Azeri referee Rahim Hasanov to stop play for a minute in order for the players to drink some water.

The Birkirkara players looked refreshed after the short break to immediately open the score as Plut’s backheel filtered through a sea of Blue shirts to reach the Bosnian area and into the path of Srdan Dimitrov who left himself almost no margin of error in getting the ball between the post and the goalkeeper.

Four minutes from half-time, the visitors were again caught out at the back as a beautiful interplay between Marcelina and Ryan Scicluna released Plut who cracked an instinctive shot rather than advancing with the ball and his effort finished wide.

Birkirkara continued to dictate matters after the break. Latching on to another excellent lofted pass from Bajada, Plut twisted and turned into the box before seeing his effort saved by Soldo.

At the other end, Miroslav Kopric effected his first notable save of the evening when diving to his left to stop Lago Wagner Santos’s rising shot.

Plut spared Birkirkara fans a nervy finale with a vicious cross-shot which Stipo Markovic deflected past his own goalkeeper with 14 minutes remaining.
