A very successful 2001/2002 season for Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club came to a close recently during the club's presentations night at the Coastline Hotel, Salina.

During this activity the club honoured its top athletes in the different sports they have contested during the season.

As expected, the national champions on the club's books took centre stage with triathlete Dermot Galea and cycling champion Jack Schiavone winning the respective annual awards in their disciplines.

The top prize, the Athlete of the Year 2002, though, went to ladies' national triathlon champion, Maria Mifsud Bonnici, for her outstanding results in the international scene. She also broke her own national Olympic distance record.

The Swimmer of the Year award went to Keith Abela following his victory in the club's open sea series, while the first local runner in the Malta Marathon, Euchar Camilleri, was chosen as the club's Runner of the Year.

The Birkirkara SJ football team, who also had a very good season in the Inter Amateur Soccer Competition, had Aaron Attard and Garth Galea named as the Footballer of the Year and top-scorer respectively. The club also honoured various other members for their services and performances throughout the past 12 months.

Ray Grech, club president, and Andy Colbourn, club director of sports, presented the trophies to the winners.
