Ħamrun Spartans 0 Birkirkara 3

Mifsud Triganza 9; Herrera 41; Camenzuli 77

A superior Birkirkara side dominated Ħamrun Spartans to ensure that this season’s premier league

championship pool will  be a three-legged race. Birkirkara’s victory in their last match before points are halved ensured that they would start the Championship pool just one point behind Valletta and Hibernians.

Torrential rain swept across the National Stadium as soon as the match started. Birkirkara tried to surge into an early lead and nearly did so through Jhonnattan, who tried his luck with a wonderful bicycle kick that finished just wide after just seven minutes.

But Birkirkara did not have to wait too long to seize the lead. The speed and technique of the Brazilian again came to fore two minutes later when his goalward strike was parried away by Cassar but Mifsud Triganza was first to the rebound, flicking the ball home.

Four minutes from half-time, a defensive blunder by  the Ħamrun rearguard yielded a second goal for Birkirkara.   Herrera intercepted a pass and crashed a powerful finish beyond Cassar.

On the 71st minute, Birkirkara could have made it 3-0 through the luckless Scicluna whose shot rattled the upright.

But Paul Zammit’s lads were not to be denied and 13 minutes from time, Birkirkara put the seal on their win with Camenzuli beating Cassar.
