Department of Biology graduates yesterday gave presentations on a number of topical environmental and other issues that they worked on for their final year electives or dissertations, including:

• Environmental impacts of village/town feasts, of the Magħtab landfill, of marine litter and of marinas in Malta;

• New data on Għadira nature reserve, Simar, Wied ta' l-Arkata, and Wied tal-Miżieb and other local sites of ecological importance;

• Studies of the fouling on fish farm mooring structures;

• Aquaculture studies;

• Population genetics and conservation of local species;

• Bioactivity and potential use of plant extracts.

The presentations were discussed at the annual Biology symposium organised by the department in collaboration with Mepa's Environment Protection Directorate at the University's John Borg Hall.
