Earthrace, the world's fastest powerboat utilising solely biofuel, may call at Malta on a celebration tour after it completes its attempt to break the round-the-world speed record while promoting the use of sustainable fuels.

The powerboat left Sagunto, in Spain, on April 27 and at lunchtime yesterday was about 300 nautical miles off the island of Hawaii in the Pacific. A spokesman for the promoters said the vessel is just under 2,000 miles ahead of the existing world record for circumnavigation, established in 1998 by the boat Cable & Wireless.

Earthrace is also offering the opportunity of a lifetime to individuals to become part of this historic event. Those interested must be in good health and able to follow instructions. They will be able to pilot Earthrace during a given leg and be an active, working member of the crew.

The crew's progress can be followed via www.earthrace.net, where regular blogs are posted by the captain and crew. The site also features photos and video diaries.

The 78-foot, wave-piercing trimaran runs exclusively on biodiesel and has a net zero carbon footprint, making it one of the world's most environmentally-friendly powerboats. Pippo Psaila, EORC commercial manager, local producers of biodiesel, said EORC has taken a keen interest and has been following this project closely. "This is such an original and fantastic way to promote biodiesel on an international level. It deserves our admiration and cooperation especially in these days of international concern on fuel consumption."

Biodiesel was formulated in 1895 as a renewable fuel made from plant oils and animal fats.

It is biodegradable and produces 78.5 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions than petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel that runs in any conventional, unmodified diesel engine and is a proven fuel with over 21 years of use in Europe.
