I can only agree with Margaret Camilleri-Pace’s letter ‘Awful Ħamrun road’ (May 31) as to the speed of traffic on Joseph Abela Scholaro Street, Ħamrun.

Sadly, although it is quite a useful village core back road for people on bicycles, it has also become a bit of a car rat-run. An unloading and parking area next to the convenience store on the corner of Farsons Road only adds to the danger and makes for an exceptionally bad blind corner.

As with most village cores and back roads, they often fail to link up and when quiet ways become rat-runs, the best option is often to return to the wider main road. This is because the people in charge of planning for bicycles at Transport Malta do not seem to ride them and, therefore, miss out on exploring by bike and, importantly, end up designing ‘bikewash’ white elephants nobody uses.

If they did commute by bike, they would know that, for a relatively small amount of tarmac, some crafty traffic calming, a handful of bollards and some signage they could link the short moonscaped footpath at the end of Joseph Abela Scholaro Street with Giovanni Barbara Street and potentially create a quiet way cycle route from Triq San Ġużepp to Triq Ħal Qormi in the process.
