A big crowd watched quietly yesterday as the statue of the Assumption of Our lady was carried around the square in front of the rotunda in a feast that was muted out of respect for the victims of fireworks victims.

Mosta is in mourning for Mario Dimech, who died in the massive explosion at the 15th August fireworks factory on Friday. Prior to the cancellation of the normal external festivities, the programme had already been curtailed as a mark of respect for another victim, Mario Farrugia, who died in another explosion, at Bidnija, in February.

Yesterday's event consisted of a pilgrimage during which the rosary was recited as the statue of Our Lady was carried around the square, which was shorn of festa decorations.

Żaren Vassallo, president of Nicolò Isouard Band Club, described Mr Dimech, 41, as a perfectionist. “He was very precise in all he did. He was an exemplary man.”

The residents were shocked at the tragedy, especially because the August 15 fireworks factory was renowned for being one of the safest. “I still can’t understand what happened and we will never know. We will miss him,” one man said.

The funeral of Mr Dimech will be held tomorrow. The cortege starts at 7.30 a.m. at the corner of High Street corner with Independence Avenue. The coffin will be accompanied by the two bands of Mosta as it is carried to the parish church, where Mass will be said at 8.30 a.m.
