The Meteorological Office yesterday urged the public to take heed of its UV Index forecasts warning that these will soon start reaching the very dangerous levels of 11 or more.

It said people should seek shade between the critical times of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and be sure to apply adequate sunscreen protection.

The Met Office sounded the warning in a report on the weather for May, which it said was a rather warm month with a mean temperature of 20.2°C. The warmest day was May 31, when the thermometer at the airport reached 29.0 °C.

There were 50 hours more of sunshine than an average May, while there were two days with thunderstorms compared to the average of four days since 1951.

A total of 3.2mm of rainfall were recorded which is below the 10.7mm norm for this month.

The average sea surface temperature was 18.8°C, one degree warmer than the average for the month since 1978.
