I refer to the item entitled ‘Dog owner told to find better housing for his animals’ (January 5).

It seems dogs were found chained and in appalling conditions. It is very cruel to keep dogs in such a way because, like many other species, dogs prefer to stay away from their faeces, therefore, holding them on a short lead, no matter of what it is made, inflicts severe pain because to them it is a punishment.

However, it is not only the chain/lead or the small area in which they are kept that restricts their movement. A dog needs human companionship and love and being pampered, just as we would like a cuddle. Besides, no matter how large the area where they are kept is, they will not play on their own. Give them an hour or so of free running, especially with other dogs, and they will do anything to win your heart.

Even playing with other dogs, although they love it, becomes boring after a while. If possible, they should play with many other dogs, activities the Malta Beagle Club does every so often.
