New signing Dimitar Berbatov scored twice to lead holders Manchester United to a comfortable 3-0 victory over AaB Aalborg in Group E of the Champions League yesterday.

Real Madrid scored twice in the first half to overcome a spirited Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 in a Group H match while Juventus had to settle for a 2-2 draw in Belarus with BATE Borisov after falling two goals behind.

In London, Arsenal demolished a feeble Porto side 4-0 with two goals each from Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor firing them to the top of Group G.

Arsenal have four points from two games, one point more than Porto. Dynamo Kiev are third with two points after their 0-0 draw away to Fenerbahce.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for visitors United midway through the first half after Ryan Giggs threaded a pass through the Danish champions' defence to launch the England striker clear in the penalty area.

Berbatov blasted home his first goal as a United player in the 55th minute after a poor touch by Thomas Augustinussen gifted him the ball on the edge of the box.

The Bulgarian, who joined United from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season for 30.75 million pounds, doubled his tally in the 79th minute with a beautiful sideways scissor-kick after a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Also from Group E, Villarreal captain Marcos Senna curled in a magnificent second-half free-kick to secure a 1-0 victory over Celtic.

He swept a 25-metre effort from the left over the defensive wall and the ball dropped into the bottom left hand corner on 67 minutes with keeper Artur Boruc sprawling across in vain.

Celtic had soaked up some intense pressure yet it was their Greek striker Georgios Samaras who had the best chance of the first half when he pounded clear on the right only to flick his seven-metre shot against keeper Diego Lopez.

Villarreal controlled long periods of the game and Boruc brilliantly denied Joseba Llorente in the final minutes with a near-post block.

An own goal by Zenit defender Tomas Hubocan and an opportunistic strike by Ruud van Nistelrooy gave nine-times European champions Real Madrid their second consecutive victory.

Portugal international Danny, Zenit's record 30 million euro signing last month, was on target for the Russian champions midway through the first half but the home side wasted numerous chances after the break.

The UEFA Cup holders, making their Champions League debut this season, are still looking for their first points in the competition after going down 1-0 at Juventus in their opener two weeks ago.

Zenit threw everything forward in the second half but once again poor finishing cost the Russians at least a point. Andrei Arshavin wasted their best chance with less than 10 minutes remaining when his low drive hit the far post.

Vincenzo Iaquinta scored a first-half double to help Juventus salvage a draw at minnows BATE Borisov.

Italy forward Iaquinta saved the Serie A side's blushes by nodding in a Sebastian Giovinco cross in the 29th minute and firing through the legs of BATE keeper Sergei Veremko on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts had taken control with goals by Sergei Kryvets and Igor Stasevich on 17 and 23 minutes.

After two matches Juventus, who beat Zenit 1-0 in their opener, are second in Group H with four points, two behind leaders Real Madrid.

Dutchman Van Persie settled some early Arsenal jitters to slot the opener after 31 minutes before Adebayor headed the second shortly before half-time.

Porto, who have never won in England, capitulated after the break and Van Persie waltzed through to make it 3-0 before Adebayor converted a penalty with 19 minutes remaining.

The visitors had hit the crossbar through Cristian Rodriguez when the score was 0-0 but were outplayed as Arsenal recorded their first win in this season's competition after drawing their opener 1-1 with Dynamo Kiev.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had been critical of his side's attitude after a shock 2-1 home defeat against Hull City on Saturday that cost them top spot in the Premier League.

Bayern Munich put a nervous first-half display behind them to claim a 1-1 draw at home to Olympique Lyon in Group F.

Bayern, facing trouble on the domestic front after two successive Bundesliga defeats, gifted Lyon the lead when Martin Demichelis headed a Juninho free-kick back past his own goalkeeper in the 25th minute.

The German champions had Franck Ribery back from his ankle injury and the Frenchman caused plenty of problems.

After several near misses they got an equaliser they deserved when Ze Roberto arrived late in the penalty area to head home a Miroslav Klose cross shortly after the break.

From the same group, Steaua Bucharest snatched a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina for their first point in the competition. The result leaves the Italian team level on two points with Lyon as Bayern lead with four points.

The match in Florence was poor with many mistakes in midfield and both teams failing to build dangerous attacks, even if Fiorentina dominated for longer periods.

Steaua's Portuguese forward Antonio Semedo missed at least three chances while their defence managed to keep a tight rein on Fiorentina's Romanian striker Adrian Mutu.
