The House of Charles Grech was founded in March 1881 by Charles Grech, who settled in his homeland after a distinguished career in the British Royal Navy. He chose the fashionable main street of Valletta, then called Strada Reale, later Kingsway and now Republic Street to open his business.

The front of the establishment was a luxury tobacconist selling the finest tobacco and imported premium cigars. The middle room housed an exclusive sampling bar which for many years was patronised by local businessmen and senior officers of the armed forces. The back room was the office where the main activity was that of ship chandler and supplier to ships.

Today, Charles Grech still houses the finest cigars, tobacco and whiskies together with an extensive wine collection and a walk-in humidor with a superior selection of Cuban cigars.

History repeats itself and today, over 130 years later, Charles Grech has reopened its doors as a café and cocktail bar. The café and bar give patrons a warm welcome with a décor that features a belle époque style interior – this recalls the old traditional cafés and bars to create a bright and friendly atmosphere.

The café serves breakfast, mid-morning snacks, light lunches and aperitifs, with a wide range of drinks and exotic cocktails from the bar, and is open till late. Downstairs you will find the finest wines, spirits and tobacco available for your enjoyment, to indulge in the comfort of your own home.
