Beach thief caught red handed

A 19-year-old Somalian resident at the Hal Far open centre was handed a suspended sentence after being caught red handed stealing the belongings of a bather at St George's Bay.

The incident happened yesterday at around 10pm when Mohammed Hassan Abdillahi was apprehended by a police officer patrolling the beach.

The court heard how the bag contained several personal items including a Samsung mobile phone worth €500 and a pair of glasses costing €400.

The accused who pleaded guilty apologized to the victim who was present in court, where she was given back her possessions.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli handed the accused an 11-month prison term suspended for one year, but warned him to keep out of trouble or else he could find himself behind bars.

Dr Joseph Ellis was legal aid to the Somalian while Inspector Carol Fabri prosecuted.
