If you are planning on drinking tonight, leave your car at home and get a lift or a taxi, Assistant Commissioner for protection Josie Brincat appealed.

AC Brincat said that the police wanted families to enjoy their New Year’s lunch together and not to be in hospital with relatives who were injured because of irresponsible behaviour.

The police, he said, were going to be out in full force tonight and although there was to be a concentration of them in areas of entertainment, they would also be present in other areas, including residential.

They would be on the lookout for people driving their cars under the influence of alcohol or using their mobile phones to make calls or send messages. This was being done for the sake of safety.

He appealed to parents to pass on to their children a message on the importance of being responsible for their own safety and that of others.
