Bayern Munich weathered a fierce Manchester United storm on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League on away goals after a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford.

Arjen Robben's sumptuous volley 16 minutes from time sealed an unlikely away goals triumph for Bayern whose 2-1 first leg lead was wiped out inside seven tumultuous minutes.

With Wayne Rooney making a surprise return for United after damaging ankle ligaments in the first leg, Bayern were stunned when Darron Gibson and Nani put United 2-0 up on the night and looked dead and buried when Nani struck again after 41 minutes.

However, Ivica Olic grabbed one back after 43 minutes and when United's Brazilian fullback Rafael was sent off early in the second half and a tired-looking Rooney was substituted Bayern began to take over.

Former Chelsea winger Robben struck the killer blow, drilling an unstoppable volley past Edwin van der Sar to set up a semi-final against Olympique Lyon.
