Bay Street, St Julian's, will next Sunday host the eliminatory phase of the 51-hour pool marathon, organised every year by Vittoriosa's St Margaret's College Boys' Secondary School. The event will kick off at 10 a.m.

The marathon aims to cultivate in students a sense of altruism. Funds will be collected in aid of Tgħanniqa, a community school that gives social and educational help to children and youths in Cottonera.

This is the marathon's 11th year and 18 students have been chosen to participate in the first phase. Only 14 of them will be admitted to the final phase of the competition. The selection will be made by means of a mini-tournament whereby all players will compete against each other.

The final phase will be held between May 28 and May 30. The 14 players selected during the Bay Street tournament will be split into two groups and play each other in round-robin fashion. The best members of each group will then be admitted to quarter-finals, semi-finals and on to the final.
