The Battery Buster Campaign, which took place between August and November, led to more than five tonnes of batteries being collected.

This figure was announced by FIMBank plc President Margrith Lütschg-Emmenegger during an event held recently to award the winners of two competitions organised as part of this national initative.

The competition's top prize, a 32-inch TFT flat screen television, went to Ivan Delia, while Adelina Sultana, who placed second, received a Notebook computer. The third place prize, a digital camcorder, went to Josette Fabri.

During the same event, the winners of a battery disposal awareness competition each received an iPod Nano. The winners were students Jamie Brincat Brockdorff from San Anton School, Josef David Mizzi from Chiswick House School and Jake Pisani from St Francis School, Birkirkara.

This phase of the Battery Buster Campaign, managed by WasteServ Malta Ltd and sponsored and supported by FIMBank plc, focused on supermarkets, shopping complexes and other centrally-located retail outlets. Consumers were encouraged to dispose of their used batteries in an environmentally-sustainable manner by depositing them in special bins in participating outlets.
