The bastions in the south of the island were cleared of weeds yesterday in an operation led by the Civil Protection Department and involving a number of other organisations.

Operations manager John Gera said the operation was being carried out in preparation for the Pope's visit in April. Weather permitting, the work is expected to continue today.

A total of 44 people are taking part. A number of safety officers are overseeing the operation to ensure it runs smoothly.
