Pembroke and Depiro started a new basketball campaign in style yesterday by landing the Super Cup after defeating Siggiewi and Hibernians respectively. In the men's final, champions Pembroke were streets ahead of Siggiewi. After a rather slow start, Joe Galea's men forged ahead in the sixth minute and comfortably controlled proceedings to go into the interval with a 17-point advantage, 43-26. With Siggiewi's reaction failing to materialise, Pembroke cruised to an 84-59 victory to clinch the first MBA honour of the season. Omar Said was the game's top scorer with 30 points. The Depiro vs Hibernians tie developed into a closer affair with the Rabat side enjoying a good start to the match to take a 31-17 advantage at the halfway stage. The Paolites stormed back into the match at the start of the fourth period when they managed to reduce the gap to just four points. However, Depiro, for whom Dorianne Galea top scored with 30 points, regrouped to emerge winners 58-43. Between these two matches, Pembroke's Michael Naudi and Lucienne Bezzina of Hibernians were presented with the Player of the Year Awards they won last season.
