Labour leadership contender Evarist Bartolo pledged to upgrade the party media to include a new interactive portal to have continuous, live communication with young people.

Speaking to a group of young people in Sliema yesterday, he said change was needed in the education system to encourage students to be creative, independent and capable to take initiative.

He said that the change would also aim to encourage students to opt for sciences and technology and to teach these subjects in a more exciting manner that Malta would not lag behind. Mr Bartolo highlighted that out of 5,600 students who complete secondary education, only about 1,000 opted for maths, science and technology subjects.

He said it was time to create more space for young people to participate in various sectors. While flexibility was required at work, one had to ensure that young workers did not become "modern slaves" with no rights and poor work conditions.
