Talks between Barcelona and Xavi on a contract extension for the Spain midfielder are "well on track," president Joan Laporta said yesterday.

"For us, Xavi is a model player," Laporta said. "He knows that we will do everything necessary, even a little bit more" to keep him at the club, he added.

The Spain international, player of the tournament at Euro 2008, has been in negotiations over an extension for some time.

Discussions have not been running smoothly and Xavi wants to commit himself to the club until 2014, Barca have only offered a deal spanning until 2013.
