HSBC, in collaboration with Attard council and computer training and educational software specialists TCTC Ltd of Naxxar, Paola and Victoria, is supporting some 200 Attard residents to follow an internet course free of charge.

Applicants for the Learnweb course will learn basic internet concepts, including sending and receiving e-mails, conducting research, downloading of pictures, and using the internet to send free mobile messages.

They can also benefit from a 50 per cent discount if they enroll on a follow-up Learnweb II course which deals with how to use internet banking, e-government services, computer protection and security, chatting, downloading of examination past papers, e-ticketing and e-buying.

HSBC Attard branch manager Catherine Borg Costanzi said that "since HSBC also offers transactions through internet banking it is imperative for customers to have basic knowledge on how to use a computer and be familiar with the internet. Society is moving in this direction and we are happy to support bridging the digital divide."

Attard mayor Charlo Bonnici said that the council also has plans to install a wireless internet service in the locality's public gardens to further encourage people in the community to use computers and the internet.
