Until I read J.G. P. Bonello's stock market report, entitled 'From Chateaubriand to chicken and chips' (The Sunday Times, May 4), I had thought that the whole island was comatose to Bank of Valletta's appalling interim results announced earlier in the week. The bank seniors richly deserved Mr Bonello's acerbic comments about their prior 'guidance' (twice and unchanged) on the last half-year's performance.

In a similar situation, any London bank chairman would have been severely mauled by the City and the stock price punished. The point now being, what store to put on future BoV 'guidance' announcements?

After the BoV chairman's adroit performance, his board should adopt The Great Escape as their whistling tune.
