Balzan made it three wins in a row as a late Lydon Micallef penalty earned them a 1-0 win over Floriana today.

The first half turned out to be a balanced affair with Nicholas Chiesa forcing a smart save from Ivan Janjusevic following a Ryan Camenzuli free-kick while at the other end Matteo Piciollo was clean through but was denied by Justin Haber.

Floriana should have taken the lead on 26 minutes when Fontanella put Ignazio Varela clear. The Argentine striker rounded Janjusevic but lost his footing when he was about to shoot as Bruno cleared.

On the restart the match remained evenly poised with Floriana creating the better chances.

On 76 minutes, Fontanella released Amadou Samb who was blocked by Janjusevic while four minutes later it was Fontanella who blasted over from an inviting position.

However, a minute from time Effiong embarked on a surging run but was upended by Enrico Pepe inside the penalty area.

From the resultant penalty, Lydon Micallef drilled the ball past Haber.
Floriana’s Nicholas Chiesa was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
