Maltese jockey Noel Baldacchino has achieved a creditable second placing in the sixth Mediterranean Championships held in Naples, Italy last weekend.

The championship consisted of two 1,600m heats and Baldacchino raced against jockeys from Italy, Yugoslavia, Algeria, Morocco, Croatia, France, Ukraine, Spain and Slovenia.

In the first heat, Baldacchino, guiding six-year old Italian trotter Zitolo, finished second behind Zotar, driven by Aleksander Pejic of Yugoslavia and ahead of Zizov, under the charge of Aleksander Skvortsov.

Sunday's heat proved decisive for the final placings. Baldacchino, this time at the helm of Italy's Terence Gar, led for most of the race but was again leapfrogged in the final straight by Pejic on Umago Lod.

In the overall standings, Pejic placed first with 24 points, four ahead of Baldacchino who took the runners-up spot ahead of Ukraine's Skvortsov and Roger of Spain.
