Ackari Fathi Saleh, a 57-year-old Libyan, was this morning granted against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €3,000 after he pleaded not guilty to not declaring money he was taking with him to Italy.

Mr Saleh was about to leave Malta on a direct flight to Rome on Wednesday but he did not inform Customs that he was carrying more than €10,000. He was carrying €23,000.

He told the police he stopped in Malta to see his brother and was headed to Rome to buy marble for his own house in Tripoli. Bail was given on condition that he does not leave the island.
