Who is Martin Scicluna? An academic? A philosopher? A theologian? An astronomer? An atheist? An agnostic? A cynic? A financier? A mathematician? A doctor? A scientist? A physicist? An accountant? A father? A grandfather?

Who and what exactly is he?

As far as I am concerned he is just a man in the street walking the walk of life like the rest of us mere mortals. He was a great friend of my husband’s, was in the same class at St Edward’s College, Cottonera. He joined the Royal Malta Artillery. Then joined the British civil service and did very well there. A great friend of ‘Roamer’, John Micallef, who, later on in life, he sadly fell out with.

So, I ask myself: what happened to the Martin we once loved? Has he forgotten our Christian values and culture? Does he not remember that, when speaking Maltese, we fondly invoke God and His Mother Mary many times a day in many situations? I do not mean blaspheme.

Has he forgotten his roots? Does he look down on his fellow Maltese and insinuate that they are idiots? Has he forgotten that Christianity is 2,000 years old and will be here with us for many more years, whether he likes it or not.

Has he forgotten that, killing is killing, whichever way round you turn it? Stealing is stealing, corruption is corruption, lying is lying, greed is greed, hate is hate, envy is envy.

He has sadly and, most importantly, forgotten that love is love. He will be loved by his Maker till his last breath whether he likes it, believes it, or not.
