I am writing about the terrible state of Joseph Abela Scholaro Street, Ħamrun, just in front of the Malta School of Music.
This part of the road has been in a terrible state for many years. It is also extremely badly lit as the only light available just before the entrance to the school is from a spotlight on one of the school buildings, which makes it extremely difficult to see where exactly one is walking.
Since this part of the road is all broken up – a huge container frequently parks there too – including the large rain grill and, as I said visibility is very poor, I am surprised that not many people have as yet hurt themselves. Is it possible that no students with special needs ever attend the school?
The pavement is also very high and, unless you actually enter the school gates, it is impossible for those with special needs or even elderly people to climb it. I have been using a crutch to walk for many years now and find it very difficult to negotiate crossing the road, walking in front of the school without falling or climbing the pavement.
If ever there was a street that badly needed sleeping policemen this is it. It’s a long road and quite wide and drivers certainly take the opportunity to put their foot down, especially when seeing someone trying to cross.
Could something please be done to make this road safer and the part in front of the school better lit and kept in a better state?
