There are 1,067 elderly persons currently on the waiting list for entry in homes for the elderly, Health Minister Joseph Cassar told Parliament yesterday.

Answering questions by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL), Dr Cassar said 771 persons were on the waiting list for St Vincent De Paule. The remainder are on the waiting list of homes in Corpicua, Floriana, Gżira, Mellieħa, Mosta, Msida, Mtarfa and Żejtun.

At the St Vincent de Paul residence, there were currently 1,120 inmates while there are 752 others residing in government homes for the elderly and 294 persons are in private homes under the subsidy scheme.

There were 637 are in Church-run homes and 1,005 in private homes, including those benefiting from the subsidy scheme; 226 are currently in long-term care facilities.

The minister confirmed that health inspectors last year regularly inspected government, private and Church homes to ensure that these are operating in an adequate environment and providing the adequate care, hygiene, quality, security, and social activities.
